Plaque Program
The City of Ontario’s Historic Plaque Program was established to recognize designated historic properties throughout the City with their very own bronze plaque. Ontario Heritage identifies notable landmarks - based on architectural, cultural or historic importance- and partners with property owners to sponsor commemorative bronze plaques to be installed on the exterior of the building.
Once a property is selected, the applicant will need to apply for a historic plaque through the City’s Planning Department. City staff will work with the owner to research the site and develop custom plaque text, which typically includes the building’s name, date of designation, landmark number or district, and a brief summary of its historical importance. The plaques are made of durable bronze with raised lettering (8” by 10”), offering both public recognition and prestige to the property.
Through this sponsorship initiative, Ontario Heritage covers the cost of plaque fabrication for selected properties, while the City handles installation. These plaques serve to educate the public, promote historical awareness, and foster pride in Ontario’s heritage. Each installation highlights a unique aspect of the building’s past—ranging from significant events and people to architecturally or culturally important features—ensuring these stories are recognized and remembered for generations to come.
